Here's a Quick Way to Solve the Windscreen Wipers Replacement Problem

By Vijay Aug 09, 2022

Visibility is among the most important considerations when it comes to driving, especially when it rains or snows.

That’s why you need a pair of functional wiper blades to keep you safe and these should be replaced at least twice a year.

Sounds easy enough right? While it seems fairly straightforward, it really isn't. Even with ordinary wipers, putting in a new wiper blade can turn out to be more difficult than you bargained for.

That’s why today we’ll take a look at the perfect one-step solution for replacing windscreen wipers.

Why Replacing Wiper Blades Isn’t So Simple

Changing your wipers is quite a process from choosing the correct one to actually changing it. Here’s the process you have to follow:

Step 1 - Choose the Right Size

The windscreen wiper blade assembly on your vehicle is made up of three basic components:

  • The lower part that’s joined to the bottom of the windscreen, called the wiper arm.

  • A metal frame joined to the arm with a metal retaining clip, hood, or pin on one end.

  • The blade that’s responsible for wiping the screen clean.

To get the right size, you need to find new wiper blades that fit perfectly with the whole mechanism.

Now here’s the problem, you need to measure the exact length of your current wiper blades. If you’re off even by a few centimetres, it won’t fit.

The other issue you’ll encounter is that one blade will typically be a few centimetres shorter than the other making it more confusing to choose the perfect pair of wiper blades.

You also have to consider the replacement mechanism on the wiper arm. Some cars use a hook while others have a pin mechanism.

Step 2 - Change the Windscreen Wipers

Once you’ve gone through the hassle of choosing the right windscreen wipers. It’s time for another one—fitting the wiper blade refills.

  1. Switch on the wiper mechanism on your vehicle then switch off the ignition once the blades are at their highest position. Remember to squirt the windscreen washer reservoir fluid to avoid scratching the windscreen.

  2. Gently pull the arms forward so that each one is at a 90-degree angle. The arm will lock into place with a snap sound once it’s directly perpendicular to the windshield.

  3. Turn the wiper blade upside down so that it dangles freely.

  4. Find the attachment point and push the tab to remove the blade. Note that some wipers have pin connections so you’ll need to unscrew to claw the pin off. If your car has a different mechanism, follow the instructions on the car’s manual.

  5. Place the new blades into position by sliding the hook part of the arm up and pulling the blade until it makes a clicking sound. If your wipers use a pin connector, match the hole on the blade with the pin and screw it in place.

Now turn the blades around into their normal position and squirt your windscreen washer fluid and give them a try.

Tips for Changing Your Windscreen Wipers

  • Place towels on your windscreen while you’re inserting the new blade just in case the springs in the metal wiper arms snap back. If it hits the screen, the impact can cause cracks on the windscreen.

  • Use one hand to replace the blade while the other holds the rest of the wiper assembly away from the screen.

  • Measure both wiper arms separately to ensure you get the best fitting wiper blades.
